Every so often, on a week-end, Jen & Madison demand I spend the day with them in Oklahoma City. This Sunday, April 27, 2014, we went to the Whole Foods Market, a completely Organic Grocery Store. Some might say "well Big Deal! a grocery store" but it just so happens I have never been there.
When we first entered the store we were in the Produce Dept. It looked pretty normal until I started looking close. I soon discovered items I do not see in my regular Grocery Store.
There was White Asparagus. [The main difference between white and green asparagus is that the Green needs light to gain its color whereas the White needs to be kept out of light to keep it white. ] I have never eaten the White....but I LOVE the Green.
Then I saw this oddity, Green & Orange colored Cauliflower. [Green cauliflower — a cross between cauliflower and broccoli — is slightly sweeter than white cauliflower when raw and tastes more like broccoli when steamed. Orange cauliflower has slightly higher levels of beta-carotene. A 1-cup serving of boiled cauliflower, any color, contains a whopping 91.5 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C.]
Well these stopped me in my tracks. I actually had to read the sign and then smell them to make sure they were what they said to be. Tomatoes......Heirloom Tomatoes. They were nothing like I have ever seen on my Backyard Hybrid Tomato Vines! [ A hybrid tomato is created when plant breeders intentionally cross-pollinate two different varieties or species, aiming to produce an offspring (hybrid) containing the best traits of the two parents. Heirloom Tomatoes come from seed that has been handed down for generations in a particular region or area, hand-selected by gardeners for a special trait. Heirloom vegetables are open-pollinated, which means they’re non-hybrid and pollinated by insects or wind without human intervention. How experts define heirlooms can vary, but typically they are at least 50 years old, and often are pre-WWII varieties. ]
Next we came to the cut Flowers....Very pretty.
Then we hit the Fresh Sea Food. Anyone for some Salmon Jerky. Only 20 Bucks a pound!
They even have Salmon Candy....okay?
Now this looked pretty good. Salmon Burgers. I can just see AJ (Grampy) grilling these up for Lunch.
Or maybe a very-very large slab of Salmon.
Crab Legs? YES.. a Fish with a head and eyes looking at Me? NO!
The Red Meat looked Great...but it looked like meat, so not many pictures. But I had to take a picture of these Beauties...Kabobs!
The Chicken also looked good and fresh....but when you see one naked chicken you have seen them all. But the Asian Marinated Chicken was putting me in the Drool Mode.
The Bulk Foods were endless. Every staple you could think of was there. Lots of Herbs & Spices, Trail Mixes, Candied Fruit, Rices, it just went on & on. They also had aisles of boxed, canned and frozen foods. After going up & down every aisle we finally came upon the Food Bar.
This was what I had been waiting for! There was salads, hot foods and soups. I opted to get my lunch off of the Bar. The bar was charged by the pound. Jen & Madison went the other direction. I circled the 3 Food Bars about 3 times. I had no idea what some of the stuff....I mean food, was. I must be very honest, nothing looked good! But this was my day to try things I had only read about.
As I said Madison & Jen went the other way of Healthy Food. Madison had a Roast Beef Sandwich and a piece of baked Egg Plant wrapped around some cheese and covered in a Marinara Sauce. Jen had Pizza and a piece of Carrot Cake.
I had Grains!!!! and Veggies and a tiny cup of Corn Chowder. Can you find the Lemon Rice, the Polenta, Couscous, Quinoa, Lentils, Tofu, Bulgur Wheat and grilled Egg Plant? I did eat it all. Would I go this route again ? are you kidding me! Madison said to Me as we were leaving "Mimi are you craving some Greasy French Fries?". and she was right I was. From there we did a bit of shopping in the City and about 2 hours latter I was starving! I beg Jennifer to stop and let me get an Ice Cream Cone. She said no she was not contributing to my waist line getting larger, but she did invite AJ (AKA Grampy) over for dinner she was grilling Burgers......TURKEY BURGERS!!!!!!!
Oh by the way I did not purchase any thing from Whole Foods....way to expensive for my taste!
